Hyperandrogenism
What is hyperandrogenism?
Hyperandrogenism is a medical condition characterized by excess levels of androgens—male sex hormones like testosterone, androstenedione, and DHEA—in the body. While everyone produces androgens, females typically have much lower levels than males. When these hormones are elevated in women, they can cause a range of symptoms and disrupt reproductive and metabolic health.

How many women suffer from hyperandrogenism?
It affects approximately 5–10% of females of reproductive age and is most associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
What are common causes of hyperandrogenism?
Common causes:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – most prevalent cause
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)
Androgen-secreting tumors (rare but serious)
Cushing’s syndrome
Exogenous androgens (e.g., anabolic steroid use)
What are some common symptoms of hyperandrogenism in women?
Hirsutism (excess coarse hair on face, chest, abdomen, inner thighs)
Acne and oily skin
Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
Male-pattern hair loss
Infertility
